Incredible House designed using Shipping Containers.

Used to transport goods around the world shipping containers are often seen as ugly unwieldy metal boxes. However, London-based designer James Whitaker has quite a different view.

Spiraling Treetop Observation Tower

treetop-denmark

Designed by the Danish architecture studio EFFEKT is the impressive observation tower rising well beyond the surrounding forest’s trees. Visitors are able to enjoy unprecedented views of Gisselfeld Klosters, a privately-owned preservation located about an hour south of Copenhagen.

At an impressive height of 1,969 feet the walkway is accessible to everyone, there are no steps, just a gently sloping ramp. Visitors are able to enjoy the scenery from all levels.

The architects explain the one of the major objectives themselves “how can we protect a preserved forest and make it accessible at the same time?” “The tower is set gently and respectfully in the forest, disturbing the existing surroundings as little as possible, while creating a new unique opportunity to take a walk above the tree tops and experience the stunning nature from a new perspective.”

EFFEKT state, “A 600 meters long tree top walkway around the forest, will be connected to the tower as a continuous experience. Both tower and walkway function as a seamless continuous ramp that will make the forest accessible for all, despite physical condition.”

The Treetop Experience is just a concept for now, but it’s well on its way to becoming a physical structure. In January, EFFEKT revealed that they had been granted building permission and that they would release further details on the project as soon as they could.

Future Kitchen

The Kitchen is often the hub of a house, how much could its design change in the years to come?

Shown at the recent NY design Week event Caesarstone and Pratt Institute have teamed up to give us a look at the self-sustaining kitchen of the future

Future-Kitchen-by-Ceasarstone

The Future Kitchen challenges technology and nature to work in unison. The concept is an experiment by Industrial Design students to create a self-sustaining space that operates through aquaponics, hydroponics, 3D printing, water filtration, indoor farming, composting and food storage.

Candlelight by LED?

Love the atmosphere created by a real flame indoors without the associated dangers?  Well take a look at Mori London’s pair of handmade glass lamps.

Created by Mori London designer and founder Moritz Waldemeyer, the two pieces are titled ‘Midnight Oil’ and ‘Eternal Flame’

Mori-London-4

Made with a small matrix of low temperature LEDs, which have been programmed to flicker and dance like a real candle. The technology is relatively simple and has the wonderful effect of fooling the eye into believing there’s a real flame inside.

Moritz Waldemeyer, has a history of experimenting with the concept of lighting through technology, at the Versace Fall 2017 runway show he used liquid ink displays whilst back in  2004 for Swarovski and Ron Arad he created the  interactive chandelier  at the Milan Design Week.

VR Computer Aided Design

“Designing within virtual reality is the next step in computer aided design” said Ekke Piirisild of the London studio VRTISAN in May 2016.

2016 was tipped to be the year for Virtual Reality.  The recent commercial release of Facebook’s Oculus Rift, Sony’s PlayStation VR, and HTC’s Vive VR, has made VR accessible to firms of all sizes.  Foster & Partners are currently using them, as are Perkins & Will.  U.S giants Gensler have set up a department entirely dedicated to VR.

VR tools offer an immersive experience of designs, and the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry are using them more widely. They could reduce the divide between the “design” and the client’s perception of that “design” before it is fully realised in physical form. They would also offer a solution for those wishing to operate internationally, and with emphasis on client interactivity.

Designer and 3D visualiser Olivier Demangel from 3dnation in 2014 said that he believes virtual architecture will be as convincing as the real thing in five years time. In 2011, he made a series of movies using plans, and photos of Ty Hedfan, a house in Wales designed by architects Featherstone Young.

Does it have to be absolutely photorealistic to be of use now? By offering us more tools to experience and communicate our designs in 3D, we can see the spatial impact of our designs, and make adjustments in real time.

“It could potentially save clients money, and reduce error not otherwise picked up using the standard Building information modelling (BIM) 3D modelling or 2D paper drawings,” says Revitso chief Executive Arman Gukasyan. San Francisco based Vizerra created their BIM product Revitso adding “gamification” and cloud solutions to provide a unified view, and it can be integrated with AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUP.

If VR is the next logical step, how would BIM and VR complement each other? IrisVR provides software that can take BIM into VR in seconds. Likewise, Autodesk is working on Project Expo using the cloud to bring BIM models from Revit into Stingray who is offering a free 30 day trialUnity for AEC also offers excellent visuals also compatible with CAD tools.

KLIO, 4K Digital Art Into The Home

Art.com is looking  to do for art and design as what Spotify has done for music: turn visual art into an ever changing and on-demand catalogue of streaming imagery for the home, all in 4K resolution.

Art in the home is evolving from static poster/prints into animated digital prints and video. Digital prints can be gathered into ‘playlists’ just like music.  Electric Objects EO1, Meural, and Depict are all competing for wall space in the home, each offering differing options of connectivity and styles. Where the KLIO differs is its large 4K display.

KLIO size dimensions

Being around 41”by 26” or the even larger 47” by 31”, both 3” thick, the framed display offers 3840×2160 pixels. The KLIO is available in three styles; Muse, Stylist and rival (seen below) each with varying frame widths, materials and style to suit your individual interior decor.

KLIO-art

The KLIO requires a wi-fi connection as art files are downloaded into its local memory. As with most technology today users are able to customise and control the KILO using a browser or iSO app.  It can display a variety of static and animated images. Art.com also has a digital marketplace where artists are able to upload and sell their work directly to KLIO.
